In the spring of 2019, I traveled to Ethiopia and Angola to tell the stories of some of the construction, garment and textile workers I encountered. The commission was part of a research project on employment patterns and conditions run by SOAS, University of London. The 25 photos below are the selection that was featured in the exhibition and workshop titled Chinese Firms and Employment Dynamics in Africa, hosted by SOAS at Senate House in London on June 27, 2019.
Industrial Development, Construction and Employment in Africa (IDCEA): A Comparative Analysis
PROJECT OVERVIEW: In recent years research on the effects of foreign direct investment on African economies and labour markets has gained a new focus with the re-emergence of concerns with broad structural transformation, and the development of industry and infrastructure in particular. The IDCEA project (https://www.soas.ac.uk/idcea/) conducted 4 years of research on employment patterns and outcomes in the infrastructure construction and manufacturing sectors in Angola and Ethiopia, where large-scale surveys of workers and extensive qualitative research were conducted between 2016 and 2018.
